The Rwanda Film Festival (RFF), which runs from 12 to 18 July, will screen over 70 films which are divided into the following programming categories:
Retrospective on Rwanda, Reflection on World Cultures, and Reflection on Young People on the Move. The festival will feature at three main locations in Kigali and
approximately four countryside venues. Kigali locations include: The Century Cinema (KCT), Club Rafiki (Nyamirambo) and The Office (In Kiyovu).
Intore, a nonfiction film by Eric Kabera which tells the story of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis and Rwanda’s recovery from the disaster, will open the
festival. The movie features local music, dance, and interviews with the country’s best dancers and musicians, including singer Cornelius Nyungura, who has not
returned to Rwanda since the genocide. A screening of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom will close the festival, coinciding with Mandela’s birthday, on 18 July.
Screenings for the Retrospective on Rwanda section will take place at the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi. The films in this category are a development on
RFF’s regular Genocide Memorial Extension Program and will reflect on the past and how it continues to affect Rwandans today.
RFF will collaborate with a number of countries in order to present Chinese, Swiss, Swedish and Belgian films in the Reflection on World Cultures section. The
screenings are available through RFF’s partnerships with the International Short Film Festival Winterthur, the Swedish Film Institute, and the Afrika Film Festival
Leuven. They will also collaborate with the GoetheInstitut and Mediatheque Française in order to present additional European films.
